A shortage of happiness probably adds substantially to the
health care costs in your organization.
Beyond being a financial drain from a medical angle,
though, negativity is terribly expensive in terms of how it
damages employee engagement and productivity. Gallup
research shows that 17 percent of all U.S. workers age 18
and older—some 22.5 million employees—are “actively dis-
engaged.” Their reduced productivity reportedly costs the
U.S. economy about $300 billion a year. 6

Nevertheless, crusty managers and other skeptics are
