THE POWER OF OTHER PEOPLE
It’s tough to build deep strengths in isolation. To a large
extent, these attributes are shaped through human con-
nections…through the ordinary social give-and-take
that we have with other people. We all move through
the hours, days, and years interpreting our stream of
person-to-person experiences in ways that either devel-
op or diminish our deep strengths.
Close relationships may carry the most punch, but even
casual encounters leave their mark on our psychological
makeup. Each interaction brings new data that we may
use to make inferences about our abilities. Every social
exchange represents one more chance to draw conclu-
sions about who we are, our worth as a human being,
and how we’ll approach the situation at hand.
