account for about 10% of the total cost of the well, so it is a major element
in well design.
Cementing of casings was described, with the two techniques (plug
cementing and stinger cementing) being covered. The most important
cement design parameters were mentioned.
Cement plugs for various purposes were briefly described.
It can be seen that good casing and cement design and execution are
critical to the safe and cost-effective drilling and producing of oil and gas
wells. Time (and therefore money) spent on design in these areas is never
wasted. Engineers involved in well design should receive training to keep
them abreast of the latest developments and should have access to the best
design tools available (such as computer programs, reference information,
and expert advice for difficult cases). They should also have the time to
complete a thorough review and design job. Unfortunately, in many cases,
not all of these elements are present.
