WORKING WITH EXTERNAL DATA 5
To apply a query, you must have access to the database,
and an ODBC, or Open Database Connectivity, data
source for the database on your computer. An ODBC data
source contains drivers to connect to the database as well
as connection information, which, depending upon the
database type, includes the database location and the
appropriate logon information.
When you install a database application, such as Microsoft
Access, on your computer, a corresponding data source is
created. If you have a custom database, such as an SQL
database, you may need to create a data source. To create
a new data source, click the <New Data Source> in the
Choose Data Source dialog box. From the Create New
Data Source dialog box, select the driver that corresponds
to the type of database to which you want to connect. In
the Final field of this dialog box, you can also select to
which default table you want to connect when you use the
data source. When you click Connect, the dialog box that
opens varies depending upon the database type you select.
You may need to specify the required logon information.
