that the accreditation is applicable to your geographic area, and that,
if you are going to complete a degree in something that requires a
license in your state, such as marriage and family counseling, or nurs-
ing, the college is approved by your local licensing board.
A single class may cost from $50 in the community college up
to $1,100 at a university. It isn’t possible to fit in this chapter or
even in this book the multitudes of institutions of higher learning
that offer this type of open enrollment. The best course of action
is to call the colleges and universities in your area and find out
whether they offer open enrollment or open university and
whether or not they have a degree program in something you’re
interested in that would apply directly as a qualification for your
new profession.

Try starting with your own state university
program. Government-sponsored universities are
always properly accredited and may be the most
likely to have an open-door policy.
