Strategic Education
When you find one of these programs, it is very likely that all
you will need to sign up for it will be your social security number,
credit card, name, and phone number. With that, you should be
able to start studying within a month or two, if not weeks or days.
If you take more than two or three classes, most of these col-
leges or universities will require that you fill in the documentation
and formally apply for entrance into the degree program. The two
or three classes that you have taken up to that point will, most likely,
apply to the credits needed for the degree.
In the next chapter, you’ll meet several people who
were actually hired for a new position while they
were still taking their first class.
Changing Your Résumé
How can you let the employer know that you’re involved at an insti-
tution of higher learning? Clearly your strategic education is some-
thing you want to emphasize so that it stands out on your résumé. In
Chapter 8, we’ll discuss using summary statements in your résumé.
Add that you are enrolled in a program in this paragraph by saying:
Currently enrolled in the course of study leading to a _________
degree in ____________ at the University of ______________.
If you feel uncomfortable saying “a course of study leading to
a degree,” you can alternatively use one of these statements:
1. Currently enrolled in undergraduate courses in ____________
at _________________ College.
2. Currently enrolled in graduate courses in ____________ at
_________________ Institute.
In those first few crucial seconds as the employer reads your
résumé, he or she will know that you are making the effort to increase
your knowledge through education and will be duly impressed by
your intent to learn. That’s the beauty of strategic education!
