out a résumé, is excellent for laying the groundwork for a
warm call.
4. Place a call to the person one to three days after the
expected arrival of the letter. See the next section for
details on what to say during your call.
The procedure for a cold call is the same as
the preceding four steps except that you do not
precede the call with a letter or any form of
written communication. In other words, skip
step 3.
Your 30-Second Phone Pitch
The core of your cold or warm call is something that is sometimes
referred to as a 30-second pitch. You can compose your own pitch by
using portions of the summary statement from your résumé. Let’s take
a moment to rehearse this technique so that you can get the feel of
writing your own pitch. Take a look at the previous samples of both a
warm- and a cold-call phone pitch. Use the following phone pitch tem-
plate to construct your own pitch for a cold call or a warm call. You will
have to make slight modifications in this pitch template to suit your
own situation. Just keep in mind that your pitch has a very specific aim.
