Fearless Career Change
HIRING MANAGER: Actually, on that week, Friday the 22nd
would probably be better.
JOB SEEKER: Morning or afternoon?
HIRING MANAGER: Let’s see. My morning is booked.
JOB SEEKER:Would 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. work?
HIRING MANAGER:Yes, why don’t I see you at 3. I’ll transfer
you back to the receptionist, and she’ll make the appoint-
ment for you.
JOB SEEKER: Thanks so much, Dr. Robinson, I’m looking
forward to it!
HIRING MANAGER: Goodbye.
JOB SEEKER: See you on the 22nd.
Sample Phone Script (Continued)
Perseverance Pays!
It’s certainly possible that you will not have to deal at all with being
screened or with the employer’s having objections. I know some-
one who made a cold call to a medium-sized company on a holiday.
Guess who answered? The president of the company. Who else
would be there on a holiday? The president was so impressed with
the bravado of the caller’s phone pitch that he offered her a job on the
spot—on the phone!
If you get the decision maker’s voice mail, it is
best not to leave a message. That puts the ball
in his or her court. Try the phone call later.
Perseverance really pays off when it comes to warm and cold
calling. One of my clients to whom I taught direct-contact tech-
niques called me after the second call and said she couldn’t do it.
I urged her to continue. She called me after her eleventh call and
said she’d absolutely had it.
