Loving Your New Career
purpose, you can’t help but make the world a better place and set
an example for everyone you meet. Your new vocation may not be
glamorous or even heroic. It may be very ordinary. Like the man
who repairs shoes.
Every time I go to my shoemaker and he hands me my finished
shoes, I notice his unmistakable pride in the work he has done. It
is as if, by simply shining shoes, replacing heels, and fixing insoles,
he is performing a work of art. He looks very happy to me. He is a
man with a mission, and though I don’t pretend to know what it is,
it is palpable. This man does his work with a kind of integrity that
is possible only when answering to an authentic calling. When I
leave his store, I’m not just carrying a bag of shoes. His happiness
goes with me.
