primary pollutants and the constituents of the unpolluted atmosphere (Fig,
4-6). The atmosphere may be viewed as a reaction vessel into which are
poured reactable constituents and in which are produced a tremendous
array of new chemical compounds, generated by gases and vapors reacting
with each other and with the particles in the air. The pollutants manufac-
tured in the air are called secondary pollutants; they are responsible for most
of the smog, haze, and eye irritation and for many of the forms of plant
and material damage attributed to air pollution. In air pollution parlance,
