2.2.3 Magnetic Mirrors
The basic idea of ‘open’ plasma confinement devices is to produce areas with
enhanced magnetic field B > B at the ends of a machine (Fig. 2.3A), making a

part of plasma particles trapped between two mirror cells that act as electrostatic
‘end plugs’. This, however, is not sufficient to confine the plasma effectively.
The concept development path went like a complication of the magnetic mirror
confinement topology, giving rise to the following:
