The W7-X machine is the first modular stellarator fully optimised ac-
cording to physical criteria (Table 2.7; Fig. 2.15). It is a very complex de-
vice, designed using non-trivial engineering solutions. It is also an exten-
sion of the line of modular stellarators launched by the Max Planck Plasma
Physics Institute (Germany), and a product of improvement of the Wendel-
stein 7-AS that was successfully operated in 1988–2002. One important
