Uppal, Dan Verakis, Michelle Vidano, Joe Wheeler, Bill White,
and Richard Wood. Special thanks to Geoffrey Nudd and
Henry Pak, who spent months researching corporate entre-
preneurship as part of our early study team.
Many of these growth leaders have also been active members
of our Kellogg Innovation Network (KIN) at the Kellogg School,
a group without which our work would be much more pale and
abstract. In this context, we would like to express particular grat-
itude to Betsy Holden, Blythe McGarvie, and Peter Bryant for
deep engagement in the development of the KIN and our
research reported herein. Thanks to Professor Steven Rogers for
offering the opportunity to build a class at Kellogg around cor-
porate innovation and new ventures as part of the Entrepre-
neurship and Innovation program. Our work has benefited
substantially from the interaction with our entrepreneurship col-
leagues within the Levy Institute for Entrepreneurial Practice,
particularly our colleagues Barry Merkin and Scott Whitaker.
Many thanks to all of the Kellogg MBA and EMBA students in
Evanston, Hong Kong, Miami, and Tokyo with whom we’ve
worked over the years. Your high standards and commitment
make the effort worthwhile. Thanks as well to Rahi Gurung and
Kristen DaRosa for keeping us on track at Kellogg. We are for-
ever grateful to be part of such a vibrant community of learning.
Our business partners, Allan Platt and Scott Bowman, as
well as the entire Clareo Partners LLC team, provided support
in numerous ways, particularly the tireless efforts of Ari Gar-
ber and Heidi Johansson.
Many thanks to the people who offered comments and rec-
ommendations on early drafts, particularly Debra Davis, Kurt
Estes, Frieda Landau, Daniel Press, Noah Richmond, Nathan
Wagner, Susan Wagner, and Stephanie Wolcott.
Our literary agent, Reid Boates, is the consummate profes-
sional, and our editors at McGraw-Hill, Mary Glenn and Brian
