Writing across
generations –
for colleagues
as well as clients

the rewards of generational diversity
Effective writing is increasingly the route to getting into an organi-
zation. You need the foundations in place. Once in, if you are to
develop your career, you’ll need to fine-tune your communication
skills – not just to the task but also to the differing levels of reader-
ship you’ll encounter.
In later chapters, I’ll show you how to write across cultures in
an international context. Right now, I’d like to touch on how to
write across generations.
There can be up to five generations in today’s workplace and
client base, commonly classified as:
● ● The Silent Generation/Traditionalists – born before 1946
● ● Baby Boomers – born between 1946 and 1964
● ● Generation X – born between 1965 and 1980
