H. Bitburger Brewery, Bitburg (Germany)
The excellent results obtained with the combination of Tower Biology and
induced air flotation at the Konigsbacher Brewery in Koblenz prompted the
Bitburger brewery to choose the same system. The plant at Bitburg com-

prises a tower ( 20 24 m; V¼7300 m ) and a downstream flotation
unit consisting of two parallel flotation cells, each with a volume of

50 m . The plant commenced operation in January 1984 and treats
3
7200 m of effluent daily.
The Tower Biology utilizes mild steel, rubber-lined towers (two tanks of
15 17 m, water level 15 m).

Figure 5.14 shows two-tower biology followed by gravity clarifiers. It is a

treatment plant of capacity 5600 m /day.

5.4 SUMMARY OF LOPROX AND TOWER BIOLOGY
The LOPROX process (low pressure wet oxidation) was developed by
Bayer for the separate pretreatment of selected effluent streams containing
high concentrations of organic substances that degrade too slowly in
