128 It’s Not a Glass Ceiling, It’s a Sticky Floor
• How do I recognize my own political blind spots before
they become an obstacle or landmine for me?
This chapter will address these questions one by one.
How Do You Know When You Have It?
I usually answer this question with a set of additional questions. See
how you would answer them.
Are You Politically Savvy? Yes No
1. Are you sought after as a key resource for
information in your area of expertise? Do
people expect that you will know before
they do?
2. Do you know how important decisions are
made and by whom, in most cases? Do you
know who most influences the decision-
makers?
3. Do you, in general, understand why and
how things happen the way they do? Are
you usually not surprised by events or
announcements?
4. Do you know, at any given time, who the
key players are? Do you know who’s in and
who’s out and why?
5. Do you always trust that people mean what
they say? Can you read between the lines in
e-mails, meetings or even in general
conversations?
