Do each of the things we stress well, and the larger goal (success) will
take care of itself.
■ If for some reason I didn’t do well today, I will do so tomorrow. My best
is the best I could do today, and tomorrow I will strive to do better.
■ I will be the ultimate judge of my performance. I am not working to
please others, but myself. I work to my own standards of excellence.
■ I love difficult challenges; the tougher the circumstances, the better I
perform. Challenges provide me the opportunity to develop new capa-
bilities, to discover powers I didn’t know I had.
No matter what others say and do, I am always a capable person.
■ What is the worst thing that could conceivably happen if I fail? And then
what? And what is the likelihood that it will occur?
Respond to Problems Positively and Energetically
Here are some reminders that have proven helpful to leaders:
■ No matter what, I will accept each challenge and my reaction to it. I will
work with what life sends me and try to make the best of it.
■ I will try to approach my toughest challenges aggressively. I will play to
succeed. I want to win, to be the best, to do the best work, to be trusted
by my customers to do the best work possible, to get the work. I will
work to the best of my capabilities and succeed.
■ Though my enemies attempt to slay me and I am in fear, I shall put down
my fears and live to fight another day. (Saint Anselm’s Prayer, posted on
the desk of former President Richard Nixon.)
■ I will include others in my success. I will gain their commitment by giv-
ing of myself and helping to empower them, and by giving them credit. I
will gain influence and power by sharing it with others.
