              ■ Whom have I affected for better and for worse?
              ■ How have I developed? What do I need to work on next?
              ■ How does the job fit into what I really value in my life, my family,
                 and my lifestyle in general?

           5. Reserve at least a week each year in your busy schedule to participate in
a professional development seminar, workshop, or retreat. These events might
be technical and concern the content of your job. Strengthen areas where you
feel less confident, and broaden areas of strength. Develop your management
and leadership skills by attending an executive education program at a
respected graduate business school such as Wharton, Kellogg, INSEAD, Stan-
ford, or IMD (a business school based in Switzerland) or through an organi-

Leadership, the American Management Association (AMA), or the National
        Training Laboratory (NTL) Institute.

SOARING: SHARPENING THE WAY YOU THINK
ABOUT YOUR WORK AND PERSONAL LIFE

Successful leadership also means sharpening your mental outlook and the way
you view yourself, your job, your family, and your friends. SOARING is a cre-
ative approach to thinking and viewing your personal and professional world,
and it suggests seven points that successful managers can live by:

S Superior leadership is your daily goal and primary work value.
O Opportunities to succeed abound—you can make them happen, and
every day they come your way.
A Achievement and success require a positive mindset that you can learn
             and develop.
R Respond to problems positively and energetically.
I Inform yourself about the common work problems and personal pit-
falls of leaders who are moving up.
N Never fail to develop as a leader.
G Gain an understanding of the impact of moving up on your family,
             health, and time.
