In the remainder of this chapter, we will suggest principles that can help you, your
spouse or partner, and family through the experience of navigating a new lead-
ership role. These principles can increase your ability to anticipate the personal
and family life implications of being a leader on the rise. Before looking at the
principles, let’s look at the issues that help and challenge you to successfully inte-
grate your new leadership role and your family and personal life outside of work.
Typical Areas of Personal Conflict
Earlier in this chapter we listed important considerations related to your per-
sonal and family life that you should look at very closely as you think about
moving up. The following is an expanded list of the areas most frequently

affected when you take on bigger and tougher responsibilities. You might
want to create your own checklist or use the list below to help you anticipate
and plan the management of issues that could become troublesome:
