4.12 PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
In addition to the many designations in national and international standards, of which there may
typically be both old and new versions, there are trade association designations. Cross-references to
many of these may be found in sales literature and point-of-purchase information.
4.10 STANDARD SLI AND OTHER LEAD-ACID BATTERIES
SLI battery sizes have been standardized by both the automotive industry through the Society of
Automotive Engineers (SAE), Warrendale, PA, and the battery industry through the Battery Council

International (BCI), Chicago, IL. The BCI nomenclature follows the standards adopted by its
predecessor, the American Association of Battery Manufacturers (AABM). The latest standards are
published annually by the Battery Council International. Table 4.10 is a listing of the Standard SLI
and other lead-acid batteries abstracted from the BCI publication. 3
