ere we are, halfway through. Hopefully, you’re getting the idea
Hthat although this type of culture change may not be easy, it is
relatively simple. All you have to do is follow two steps:
1. Decide to decide—and decide! That is, decide to be someone
who sets cultural precedents at least as often as you follow them.
Then decide what precedents you will set.
2. Gain support. Encourage some of the people around you to fol-
low your new precedents and to pass them along to others.
You have already defi ned your new precedents and “attached” the
fi rst new member of your crystal. Now it’s time to think a little big-
ger and consider who else you might enlist. During this process, we’ll
get more specifi c about the meaning of “adding a member to your
crystal” and why, from another person’s perspective, he or she would
want to “join” your group.

You’ve selected the person with whom you have the most infl uence
and begun to role-model overtness about task and clarity within rela-
