his or her own network of contacts. By adding a person, you are
indirectly connected to others via his or her links. Actually, your fi rst
addition exposes others in the network to your new cultural patterns
in three different ways, as shown in Figure 5.2.
First, consider the colleagues with whom you don’t work on a regu-
lar basis. They may infl uence your workplace, but you can’t role-
model directly because you don’t have enough interaction with them.
You don’t have a direct link, but your new partner-in-culture might!
He or she can influence some of the people you can’t, demonstrating
new cultural patterns to those you couldn’t reach.
Second, consider those to whom both you and your new partner-
in-culture are connected. With both of you role-modeling overtness
and clarity, those people will get two different examples of how your
new precedents work. Think of the power of this strategy: what they
see you doing, they also see someone else doing. It’s like having mul-
