and it will simply not convert into frozen water. As nearby particles
of water attach to the ice crystal and change their form, they spend
no energy trying to encourage the granite to do so. The new crystal
simply wraps around the granite, leaving it to exist as it sees fi t in the
newly changed environment.
Notice the wrapping effect at work in Figure 6.1. One of the indi-
viduals who is role-modeling to your impossible person is someone
with whom you don’t have a direct link. As your crystal members add
their own new members, the most resistant people begin to experience
more and more role-modeled examples of the new cultural patterns
from people who don’t even interact with you on any regular basis.
This is why it works to ignore the diffi cult people around you and
focus on the more pleasant ones. In enrolling new members where you
can, you ultimately end up infl uencing your most diffi cult coworkers
without ever dealing with them directly. All it takes is the consistent
practice of your good habits.
