Leading Your Crystal

Whatever you do, don’t feel as though you need to force this. As
with everything else we’ve discussed, the emergence of advisees and
your corresponding comfort level with the role of advisor will happen
naturally, just as your crystal grows organically. This may sound all
too familiar, but stay true to your good habits and the rest will take
                  care of itself.

                                            EXERCISES

                     1. Consider how frequently others ask for your advice and what
types of advice they solicit. Has the frequency changed since you
began building your new culture? Have you noticed a change in
the number of requests for your feedback or situational advice,
as opposed to informational requests? Keep an awareness of this
frequency to monitor for changes in the future.

                     2. The next time someone comes to you with a complaint, treat it
as a request for situational advice and follow the suggestions in
this chapter. Begin by establishing the answers to “what” and
“if”—that is, learn as much as you can about the situation, then
ask the person directly whether he or she is seeking your advice.
If your advice is indeed being sought, set the stage carefully by
explaining what you have to offer, and then use your new cul-
tural patterns as models for the suggestions you make.
