Leading Your Crystal

system and brings productive output to a halt. Don’t let it happen
to your crystal. As the defi ner, you must be the one who defi nes the
                  situation differently.

                  You Are the Starting Point
How can you possibly avoid the propagation of this “virus”? As we
have discussed many times in this book, it’s all about what you do.
Long before you became a defi ner, you made the conscious choice
to become the point of origination of new patterns of behavior for
those close to you in the crystalline network. This was your prologue,
the “decision to decide” that you made before you started. As your
infl uence increased, your continued, disciplined practice of overtness
and clarity naturally kept leading you to the proper decisions and
actions. By the time you reach the level of defi ner, those practices will
be working, and those decisions and actions will be coming from you
                  habitually.
Through those same practices, you can avoid the three detrimen-
tal roles of rescuer, persecutor, and victim. You will practice overt-
ness about task, defi ning goals in terms of what they are (purpose),
what their accomplishment implies to the organization (impact), how
advances toward them are made visible (progress), what they require
(resources), and how they affect the individuals working on them
(incentive and capability). You will also practice clarity within rela-
tionships, carefully defi ning the questions behind any interaction,

to recognize and avoid the three roles of the drama triangle. This is
also an easy bit of information to share if you’re trying to describe the
contents of this chapter to a trusted friend or colleague.
