Much of this chapter is based on Michael’s book, The Manager as Moti-
vator (MAM). It describes seven timeless principles that even the most

noncharismatic leader can use to create positive, highly motivating
work environments. Since these principles are timeless, they should ap-
ply equally well to managing the mobile workforce, right? Well they do,
and we share them here with a focus on how they relate to your mobile
workforce. We also added a principle, building trust, which is the es-
sential glue that ties all the motivational principles together and is even
more important for people working at a distance. Of course, technology
supports all eight of these principles in a mobile environment.
summary of the model and eight principles
There are two important motivational arenas that managers can affect
every day. The first is setting the environment, and the second is setting
and pursuing goals. Why do we care about the environment for moti-
vation if we have clear goals, accountability, and rewards? Shouldn’t
that be enough? The answer is no.
