micromanaged or abandoned? How motivating was that? Have you
ever felt as if your organization was treating you like an object—a tool
to be used—and didn’t care one thing about you personally, or your
family, your hopes, or your dreams? How motivating was that? We all
know that goal setting is one of the most powerful ways to motivate
workers, and we will discuss the keys to goal setting and pursuit later
in this chapter, but setting a climate for building long-term, sustain-
able motivation is equally important.
The first three principles are the foundational principles. They set
the stage for every other motivational principle to be effective. Our
first principle is, Trust Is the Glue. We think trust is so important that
we have written an entire chapter about it (see Chapter 4). It is all im-
