In this chapter we’ve looked at five paradigm busters, each with com-
pelling stories behind them. We’ve examined the changing rules of
today’s workforce and problems the new paradigm doesn’t solve, and
may even cause. Finally, we’ve proposed a working definition of the
mobile workforce for your consideration. In Chapter 3 we’ll talk about
Presence—how people separated by thousands of miles can feel like
they are in the same room together.

                           Meet Jerrod
This bio describes an existing mobile worker. His story is
real and so is his perspective. Here he discusses the positive
life–work balance achieved with his employer by working
                           mobilely.

Hi, my name is Jerrod. I am here to tell you about my job.
For the past seven years I have been a mobile worker.
I am 35 years old and married. I am working as a pro-
fessional in the medical equipment industry in a very large
company. I have held a variety of sales roles leading cross-
functional teams and consulting with customers. At present,
I’m engaged in sales training and development.
I have been with the company about four years now. I
must admit, I enjoy working from home. This is the most
economical arrangement for both me and my employer—not
to mention that I am much more productive. I spend about
50 percent of my time outside my home office working with
sales professionals. The other time is divided between prep-
aration, designing training, and updating our programs to
                           better leverage technology available.
