Despite our remote geography, we manage to work quite
well as a team. We spend upwards of 15 days per quarter
working together onsite. When we are working remotely, we
use a host of supporting tools, such as Web and telecon-
ferencing, Skype, or just plain phone and e-mail, to keep in
touch.
In all, I have a very attractive work–life balance. I don’t
have to spend time in traffic. I do, however, tend to spend
a considerable amount of time flying. I work more than 50
hour weeks, but it doesn’t seem like work, just something I
need to accomplish.
A drawback of working remotely is a tendency to sneak
into the office to complete just one small task. That task can
turn into hours if you don’t have clear boundaries.
Overall, the remote work arrangement is beneficial to
me, my family, and my company. I get to spend more time
at home, have flexible hours, and schedule around impor-
tant events outside of work. The company saves the cost of
providing an office [and] benefits from more hours worked
and enhanced productivity. Overall, I feel this is a healthy ar-
rangement, both for me and my company.
