nothing, attention must be paid to reducing the psychological distance
between workers and managers. We will share specific “how-to’s” in
later chapters, but for now it’s important just to know that technology
is a way, but not the only one, to reduce that distance.
` presenCe—the Future
Picture your workforce 30 years from now. How will you be commu-
nicating with them? iPads will be long gone. No one will be carrying
around an Android or a BlackBerry. HP’s Halo Meeting Room will
have lost its wings by then. What will they be carrying, or will they
be carrying anything at all?
Technology has progressed so rapidly over the last few years that
a person has to believe that anything that can be imagined can also
be developed. Past experience is instructive. What one generation
perceives as magic (e.g., regeneration of body parts, radio waves, mi-
raculous cures) the next generation of scientists invents. We believe
that the ability for people dispersed throughout the world to perceive
