participants for such an enjoyable and informative experience. Many people
have shaped my thinking, and helped me in the time I have been planning and
researching this book, including curators and other staff in a number of
museums, who talked to me and answered my questions regarding various
exhibits. My apologies to those I have omitted to mention here. I would also like
to express my gratitude to Sharon Macdonald and Tony Bennett for their help
and support, and to the very patient series editor, Stuart Allan.
My little daughters Honor and Hopey Parish have tolerated my distracted-
ness and become very resourceful in finding new ways to attract attention.
Fortunately, they both love museums. John Parish has read passages for me,
managing to appear interested as I rehearsed ideas and arguments with him,
while also pursuing his own work. This book is dedicated to him with love and
admiration. I am also grateful to our friends and relatives who have helped us
out over the last two years, in Bristol and in Tucson. Finally, writing this has
made me very appreciative of the early experience that my parents, Chrys and
Mike Henning, gave me. The museums and exhibitions they took me to as a
child are still vivid in my mind, and those memories have shaped this book.
