My mission in this book is to take you on the unlikely journey
of a claustrophobic, acrophobic F-16 fighter pilot, revealing
the lifesaving, career-making tools I picked up along the
way—tools that will also enable you to break through what-
ever barriers are keeping you from soaring higher, faster, and
freer. The process will teach you to trust and partner with
yourself, the most important wingman you’ll ever have. And,
just as important, to surround yourself with a trusted team of
partners who will make the journey with you. These are your
wingmen, and the mutual trust you have with them will result
in greater success, whatever the mission.
Although my journey involved high-speed aerial combat,
the real essence of the battle to soar higher is no different
from yours. We all have our personal demons to slay and
obstacles to overcome. I took a path that was a little uncon-
ventional: climbing into a supersonic jet fighter to slay my
phobias. The point is, if I could do that, you can power
through any obstacle between you and your highest dreams.
FINDING THE MEANING IN YOUR MISSION
The journey can’t begin until you find a mission in your work
and life that is worth fighting for. I share this with you now
because the rest of this book is meaningless until you commit
