manufacturing locations, insurance companies, and corporate head-
quarters fall into the basic category of organizations requiring this
                                     type of bandwidth.
One major supplier of enterprise WDM systems has several
installations requiring more than 100 connections between two sites,
making WDM essential to preserving fiber resources. Many major
corporate users are asking for high-capacity private lines at OC-12
(622 Mbps) and OC-48 (2.5 Gbps) rates. To satisfy this need, WDM
and DWDM are the preferred choices to deliver the speeds needed.
The connections discussed are included in Figure 6-3 across the met-
ropolitan area and Figure 6-4 for remote SAN access.
ONI has developed an optical switch for the metropolitan area
to link the access to the metropolitan network, as shown in Figure
6-4. This high-end service offers the ability to interconnect from
the customer door to the middle of the incumbent local exchange
carrier (ILEC), for example the TELCO, networks or the data local
                                     exchange carrier (DLEC) networks.
