Notice that this BOM contains a negative amount for three of the items. This allows stan-
dard material planning systems to be used to control the remanufacturing operation. Since
MRP was designed originally to support a one-to-one or many-to-one relationship between
components and parents parts, attempting to plan multiple parent parts on a single order is
not possible. Having a negative amount in the BOM allows a standard system to handle the
fact that one item is made into many in the initial remanufacturing disassembly phase.
The first step in a standard work-order release is to create a work-order number and
then issue the materials to that order. In this case, the order would be created for the dis-
