Productive Meetings
The Motivational Mindset
■ Begin on time.
■ Share and follow an agenda, and keep the discussion focused
and moving forward.
■ Encourage people to share ideas and strategies. Allow the
group to brainstorm solutions to problems.
■ Control the flow, slowing down when critical issues arise.
■ Avoid putting people on the spot unless it’s unavoidable.
If you want someone to present an idea or explain an issue
publicly, ask that person ahead of time.
■ Talk about achievements and give kudos and thanks to those
who have earned them.
■ Talk about challenges from the perspective of seeking
solutions.
■ Share positive customer service reviews of the company and of
individuals by name. When you share negative comments, do
not name names. Speak to those employees privately.
■ Discourage groupthink, which may be exhibited by con sistent
blanket agreement. A manager who encourages individuality
and is comfortable with dissent can prevent perpetual
groupthink.
■ End on time and conclude with clear direction about
expectations based on the meeting and, if appropriate,
planned follow-up.
