Interpersonal trials arise within any team, but you don’t need
to set the stage unnecessarily. Your goal is not to test their
abilities to deal with one another; your goal is to create a team
that will get the job done.
■ The most talented team member is not necessarily the best
choice for team leader. Look for someone who is fair-minded,
has good organizational skills, and is respectful of other team
members.
■ No task within a team project is small or menial. All
contributions are part of the end result.
■ Instill a customer-centric team spirit in your staff.
■ A hierarchy in which the (manager, supervisor,
team leader . . .) shoulders all responsibility and takes all credit
is less likely to create buy-in and dedication among team
members.
■ Everyone deserves credit when the team does well.
■ Individuals who put in extra time and energy or act beyond
the call of duty deserve individual recognition as well as being
recognized as part of a successful team.
