relations. Those good relations will make your job easier and

■ “We all enjoy your friendly attitude. However, continual
chatting during work adds to everyone’s end-of-day pressures.
We’ll all be more relaxed if we save personal conversations for
personal time.”
■ “In the office, the Internet is used for business. Please save
your personal instant messages and cybershopping for home

Performance Review Meeting Prep
The Motivational Mindset
■ Communicate the process mechanics to employees.
■ Schedule annual or semiannual performance reviews and
make sure to keep the appointments you’ve set. Nothing is
more unsettling than waiting for the ever-postponed review.
■ Schedule meetings in advance to allow you and the employee
time to prepare.
■ Approach the process with a view to the “total picture.” Do not
focus on the most recent events—positive or negative.
■ Review your notes regarding the employee’s performance
as well as any coaching and feedback discussions and their
results.
■ Determine specific changes you want to see as a result of your
discussion and plan open questions to focus on these changes.
■ A well-planned and well-conducted performance review will
inspire, not deflate. The goal is to help employees reach their
full potential and provide guidance and support so they can.
