ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

One cannot write a book after 30 years of practising geology and acknow-
ledge adequately the great influence many people have had on one’s develop-
ment as a geologist. To all my past and present colleagues I owe more than
I find it comfortable to admit. I thank particularly Pierre Freymond, a friend
for more than 25 years and a colleague for several, who has greatly influenced
my geological thinking; Hollis Hedberg, whose friendship I have greatly
valued and who has been a constant source of enlightenment and encourage-
ment; and John Webb, who has been a valued colleague, friend and critic for
the last 12 years or so.
The authors of published works are, of course, the sowers of seeds and the
cultivators of their progeny without whom there would be no science. In
particular, I have benefited from the works of M.K. Hubbert, J.M. Hunt,
            P.E. Kent, W.W. Rubey, K. Terzaghi, R.W. van Bemmelen, L.G. Weeks, and,
of course, H.D. Hedberg. None would agree with all I have written.
To my colleagues and students at this University I owe a special debt of
gratitude. Margaret Eva, in the Geology Library of this University, has shown
tenacity, tolerance and good humour in tracing and acquiring numerous
works from other libraries. I am also most grateful to Irene Lenneberg, who
drew almost all the figures that are not otherwise acknowledged.
No-one but myself is responsible for the shortcomings in this book.
I am greatly indebted to the following organizations for permission to use
