Both PPI and CPI are normally used for water treatment under
atmospheric conditions. The 45 inclination of the plates may present a
problem when produced water contains appreciable amounts of sediments
or sand, particularly oil-wet sand. The solids have the tendency to adhere
to the surface of the plates at such an angle of inclination, which may
cause clogging of the plates. To avoid such a problem and to enable
treatment at pressures higher than atmospheric, modified CPI equipment
known as cross-flow devices have been developed. In such equipment, the
angle of inclination of the plates is made steeper than 45 (normally 60 to
