242 APPENDIX 2
Steam Cracking A noncatalytic process in which hydrocarbons are cracked in
the presence of steam at elevated temperatures.
Steam Re/cmning Reaction of steam with carbon-containing materials to give
carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
Straight Run Gasoline An uncracked gasoline fraction distilled from crude,
containing most paraffinic hydrocarbons.
Subs/illite Natural Gas (SNG) Methane produced from synthesis gas derived
from steam reforming naphthas, coal, or biomass.
Synthesis Gas Any mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
Transalkr/atioll An alkylation reaction with an intramolecular alkyl group
transfer.
Visbreaking Thermal cracking of crude oil or reduced crude under mild condi-
tions.
Weight Houriy Space Velocity Mass of feed per mass of catalyst per hour.
Yield Use in two ways: (1) the ratio of the amount of a given product to the
amount of reactant; and (2) the ratio of the amount of a given product to the
amount of reactant converted.
