kieselguhr and MgO to the carbonate and nitrate solutions simultaneously,
stirring vigorously. Filter and wash with distilled water until free of sodium
ions. Dry the filter cake in an oven at 110°C overnight. Crush to 8-12 mesh.
Heat the catalyst in a furnance in a stream of hydrogen, reaching 400°C
in 2 hr. Hold at 400°C for 2 hr.
3.3. Cobalt-Moly Alumina (Hydrodesulfurization)
Prepare a solution of ammonium paramolybdate by dissolving 92 g in
300 cm of H 20. Add this solution to 525 g of dehydrated thete-alumina in

the form of 0.8 mm extrudates. Allow the mixture to stand, with agitation,
for 30 min. Remove the extrudates and dry for 4 hr at 110°C. Prepare a
cobalt solution by dissolving 85 g of CO(N0 3 )2 6H 20 in 250 cm of H 20.

Add this solution to the dried extrudates and soak for 30 min. Then dry at
110°C for 10 hr. Calcine at 550°C for 10 hr, increasing the temperature at
the rate of 1°C per minute.
The catalyst is activated by sulfiding in hydrogen containing 10%
hydrogen sulfide at 400°C for 4 hr.
