Professor McGregor wrote this in The Professional Manager, pub-
lished more than 50 years ago. Sadly, many leaders still fail to see the
simple genius. They hold onto the tired assumptions that commonly
lead to employee disengagement. McGregor knew only too well why
leaders could not embrace this new ideology—fear of a perceived loss
of power and control, as witnessed by the “voices of disengagement”
presented earlier in this chapter.
