: HOW EMPLOYEES GET THE MESSAGE “YOU’RE NOT
IMPORTANT” IN BIG AND SMALL WAYS
In doing a microanalysis of employee survey comments, we cataloged
some additional ways employees see the signs that may seem inconse-
quential and unintended to the leaders and managers who send them:
: The employee receives no eye contact or greeting from the
manager when they pass each other in the hallway.
: The employee is not welcomed or is ignored entirely on the
first day of employment.
: The manager allows phone calls to interrupt “important”
meetings with employees.
: The employee has not received needed supplies, equipment,
data, or assistance.
: There is a failure to respond to employee requests for infor-
mation or meetings.
: Meetings are continually postponed, especially performance
evaluations.
: The employee has to work in hot, cold, cramped, stuffy, dis-
organized, or run-down quarters; in noisy, smelly, or toxic
surroundings; or in any other kind of unsanitary or unpleas-
ant conditions.
