The six drivers are universal in the sense that all six are to be found
at high levels in the cultures of the most highly engaged workplaces
in our study. Indeed, because the six drivers are intertwined with one
another and woven into the fabric of an organization’s culture, it is
almost inconceivable that a premier employer would score low on one
or more of these drivers.
Our research indicates that these six drivers work in concert to
amplify overall employee engagement. Other factors have an impact
on employee engagement, but none rise to the same level of primacy.
They create a gestalt, a whole that is more than the sum of its parts.
The absence of one driver may easily cancel out the benefits gained by
the presence of another, as these examples show:
