cupation, but when it came to accomplishments, she said in a
friendly but firm manner, “You know, in my country we are taught
not to say things like this about ourselves, so I will pass.”
Some of the personal traits that have been identified with be-
ing successful in cross-cultural encounters include flexibility, a high
tolerance for ambiguity, empathy, and the ability to communicate
respect (Ruben 1982, 333). To me, these attributes add up to a
mental stance of readiness. Athletes are taught to assume a posi-
tion with knees bent and weight on the balls of the feet so they
can instantly move in any direction in reaction to the play of the
ball or the needs of their teammates. So should we be positioned
in the intercultural arena. Cultural awareness, sensitivity, and the
ability to laugh at our inevitable missteps will go a long way in
helping us deal with the unexpected moves of our fellow players.
