68 Reading Between the Signs
American Deaf culture, which can be characterized as collectivist,
high context, polychronic, and past oriented. In addition we have
touched on some of the variations in communicative style among
cultures.
My purpose has been to give you a sampling of the many
different flavors that make up the smorgasbord of human experi-
ence. If sign language interpreters, like trained chefs, are familiar
with the range of tastes shaped by cultural expectations, then we
can blend our interpretations to suit the preferences of particular
palates.
