between suction or discharge pressure and atmospheric pressure on each
compression stroke, with the full discharge pressure existing only for a
short period on each stroke. The problem then is one of sealing a mini-
mum of the differential between suction pressure and atmospheric pres-
sure for a short period of each stroke. These conditions of time and pres-
sure breakdown across a set of packing are illustrated in the following.
Condition 1. Both suction and discharge pressures are sealed by the
first pair of rings.
