You should also bring a briefcase or portfolio with
❏ A pad for notes
❏ At least two pens
❏ A leather binder holding any awards or letters of recom-
mendation
❏ Extra copies of your résumé and a list of references
❏ Your business cards
Arrive Early
Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled inter-
view. This will give you time to fill out any required paper
work or an application, as well as a few minutes to collect
your thoughts and visit the restroom.
Get good directions to the interview site, and find out
where you should park. If you will be taking public trans-
portation, be sure you know exactly how to get there and how
long it will take. Add at least 30 minutes to your estimated
travel time. If at all possible, practice getting to the site before
the day of the interview. Try to do this at the same time of day
as you will be traveling on the interview day to get an idea of
traffic conditions and any construction or detours.
If you arrive very early, make sure that you have the right
place, and go somewhere nearby to relax or sit in your car and
review the information you have. When you go in, introduce
yourself to the receptionist, and make note of his or her name.
The receptionist is the gateway to the company, and he or she
usually knows everyone and everything. You want to make
a good impression. Ask where you can hang up your coat, if
you have one, and ask for the restroom, if you need one. If the
