WOOD- AND LUMBER-
MANUFACTURING APPLICATIONS
27.1 Industry Overview
NAICS code: all 32100s
INDUSTRY SNAPSHOT
17,202 wood and lumber operations in the United States
540,565 employees
$89.1 billion in annual sales
2.7 tons of solid waste generation per employee
Major waste streams: wood, paper, and metals
Despite the abundance of plastics and other materials, wood products continue to be
useful and popular. Woodworkers help to meet the demand for wood products by cre-
ating finished products from lumber. Many of these products are mass produced, such
as many types of furniture, kitchen cabinets, and musical instruments. Other products
are crafted in small shops that make architectural woodwork, handmade furniture, and
other specialty items.
Industries in the wood-product-manufacturing subsector manufacture wood prod-
ucts, such as lumber, plywood, veneers, wood containers, wood flooring, wood trusses,
manufactured homes (i.e., mobile homes), and prefabricated wood buildings. The
production processes of the wood-product-manufacturing subsector include sawing,
planing, shaping, laminating, and assembling of wood products starting from logs that
are cut into bolts, or lumber that may then be further cut or shaped by lathes or other
shaping tools. The lumber or other transformed wood shapes may also be subsequently
planed or smoothed, and assembled into finished products, such as wood containers.
