RECOMMENDATIONS COMMENTS
Implement a facility recycling Instituting a facility-wide recycling program would
program for paper, plastic, and eliminate the disposal of nearly 1800 lb of solid waste
aluminum cans The annual revenue generated from the sale of the
(Annual savings of $80) recyclables (paper, plastic, and aluminum cans) is
approximately $80 at current market prices, but
greater savings will be realized by the reduction of the
solid waste-hauling bill (please see next recommendation)
Reduce the frequency of Significant savings are possible by reducing the frequency
waste hauling of times the solid waste at the facility is collected. Currently
(Annual savings of $1500) the waste hauler removes waste 3 times per week.
By removing recyclables from the waste stream and more
efficiently scheduling waste hauling frequency, the waste
hauling bill will reduce by about 20%. This will incur
estimated annual savings of $1500
Install a cardboard collection Since a large amount of food arrives in cardboard
container. packages, a large amount a waste could be removed from
the waste stream. Contact the waste hauler and discuss
installing a visually appealing container. In most cases,
the waste hauler will collect the cardboard free of charge
Contact local farmers to use Some farmers in the Midwest process food waste and
food waste as animal feed. transform it into high-nutrition, low-cost animal feed. Some
farmers may be interested is some types of food wastes
generated
Install collection containers Depending on how much of these materials are generated,
for glass bottles and a portion of the waste stream could be reduced (reducing
aluminum cans waste hauling bill) and revenue could be generated from
the sale of these materials
analysts,” said Jeff Diskin, senior vice president, brand management, Hilton Hotels &
Resorts. “This hotel has set a new standard for helping to minimize environmental
impact while providing the very best in service and amenities to guests.”
The Hilton Vancouver, Washington became Green Seal certified. Based on Green
Seal criteria, the hotel implemented a comprehensive environmental management pro-
gram for property operations, which includes elimination of hazardous substances, use
of biodegradable cleaning products, wastewater management, energy efficiency and
conservation, waste minimization, reuse and recycling, and an environmentally and
socially sensitive purchasing policy. The Green Seal standards are internationally rec-
ognized as credible, transparent, and fair and provide third-party validation through
science-based testing that a product works as well or better than others in its class.
